Aubrey's coxswain in Sophie and afterwards. In Master & Commander Aubrey offers to rate him midshipman, but he refuses since he "doesn't have the learning".
Brown
Hornblower's coxswain in Lydia (The Happy Return) and Sutherland (A Ship of the Line). Accompanies Hornblower on the unsuccessful attempt to take Rosas, and is taken prisoner with Hornblower when Sutherland is forced to strike.
Bush
1st lieutenant of Lydia in the first Hornblower novel (The Happy Return), and features in most of the subsequent books. Loses a foot when Sutherland is taken by the French (A Ship of the Line), is imprisoned in France with Hornblower, and escapes with him (Flying Colours)
Jackson, Thomas
American subject, coxswain in Sibella when Ramage is 3rd lieutenant. Leading member of the party that rescues the Marchesa di Volterra, subsequently coxswain of Kathleen, Ramage's first command, and in all the subsequent Ramage stories.
Leader of the 'Greek chorus' of himself, Stafford and Rossi who provide bantering background to most of the Ramage stories, joined
in later stories by the four French royalists, Louis, Gilbert, Auguste and Albert.
Killick, Preserved
Aubrey's steward in Sophie and thereafter. Remains Aubrey's servant while he is living in Sussex. (Post Captain)
Quilhampton, James
Son of Elizabeth Drinkwater's friend Louise Quilhampton.
Taken as midshipman by Drinkwater in Kestrel and Hellebore (when Drinkwater is First Lieutenant), and in Virago, Drinkwater's first command. Rated acting master's mate in Virago.
Serves with Drinkwater in Melusine and rated acting lieutenant. On way to join the ship meets Catriona MacEwan and falls in love.
Is 3rd Lieutenant of Antigone in 1805 and Baltic Mission. Is taken prisoner with Drinkwater on transferring to Thunderer (1805).
Leads an intelligence expedition to Koenigsberg and, when Antigone is intercepted by Zaandam on her way home, gets on board the enemy, finds her magazine and blows it up, using fuses that allow him time to escape. (Baltic Mission)
Appears in all Drinkwater books from A Brig of War on.
Rogers, Samuel
Second Lieutenant in Hellebore, which grounds in Red Sea due to his error. (A Brig of War)
Drinkwater takes him as First Lieutenant in Virago, and subsequently in Antigone. (The Bomb Vessel, 1805 and Baltic Mission)
Brave but impetuous and and resentful of being overlooked for promotion; turns to drink. Attempts to give it up and gallantly leads an attack on French artillery ashore, but eventually is arrested for treating the crew oppressively, and becomes cataleptic. (Baltic Mission).

Italian ex-thief helping provide comic relief in most of the Ramage stories (v. Jackson).
Southwick
Sailing master of Kathleen when Ramage takes command in 1796; subsequently master in all Ramage's commands.
Stafford
gunner and Cockney ex-burglar helping provide comic relief in most of the Ramage stories (v. Jackson).
Tregembo
A Cornishman, pressed as an alternative to a more severe sentence as a smuggler, befriends the young Drinkwater in 'An Eye of the Fleet'. Is Drinkwater's coxswain in all the books in which he commands a ship, up to 'Baltic Mission'. Taken prisoner with the captain in 1805 and misses Trafalgar. (1805). Wounded on an intelligence mission to Koenigsberg when Drinkwater is not present, and must give up the sea. (Baltic Mission)
Married to Susan, who cooks for Drinkwater's wife Elizabeth at home in Hampshire.
