While there were many other writers of sea stories (Captain Marryat and G.A. Henty prominent among them) before him, it was Forester who started the naval series genre with the Happy Return - Ship of the Line - Flying Colours trilogy just before the Second World War.
None of his successors have been novelists of the same calibre, and no hero as engaging as Hornblower.
