Patrick O'Brian
The late Patrick O'Brian needs no introduction from me, since it was the Aubrey/Maturin series that started the current boom in the genre.
I wouldn't want to detract from his reputation, but it is a pity that he has overshadowed some other worthy authors, notably Forester himself, Parkinson and Alexander Kent.
