Ausonius to his wife
Uxor, vivamusque ut viximus et teneamus
Nomina, quae primo sumpsimus in thalamos:
Nec ferat ulla dies, ut commutemur in aevo,
Quin tibi sim juvenis tuque puella mihi.
Nestore sim quamvis provectior aemulaque annis
Vincas Cumanam tu quoque Delphoben,
Nos ignoremus quid sit matura senectus.
Scire aevi meritum, non numerare decet.
Wife let us live as we lived; let us keep for all time
The names that we gave to ourselves when we married:
Never let days passing by bring for us any changes
Let me still be youthful and you be my sweetheart.
Even if I should outlive old man Nestor, and you
Should rival the sybil of Cumae in years,
Ripeness and age will be things you and I never know.
The worth of the years we should count, not their number.
